Do the colours work on your web site?

So much of web design is creating sub-concious messages. If you don't follow the rules, you can loose a visitor because your site just 'does not feel right' One of the biggest mistakes for self made or updated web sites is bad use of colour. I am not saying that people should not update their own sites. I encourage that they do, and regularly. Whenever you add content to a site you need to check that it will Look good.  you may find this colour wheel a useful way of checking the colours on your site, or for choosing a new colour mix. Of course the colour rules work for all type of medium, web and print. The Colour Wheel

Spam can get everywhere! – Don’t allow it on your blog!

It amazes me that people think it is good practice to Spam my email or blog with advertising messages that make no attempt to communicate with me, but to treat me as link fodder.

However, it amazes me even more that so many sites encourage this by allowing these advertising comments to be added to their blogs.

Guys, there is a simple setting in WordPress that allows you to ‘approve’ all comments before they go live on the site. If, you think this is too onerous, then simply turn off the ability for anybody to comment in the first place!!

Job done.

{Maybe one day I will create a retribution plug-in which spams the web sites of those spamming me}

Ask the Expert about…. Email

The Wiltshire Business Club is making a change to their format. They are adding an ask the expert spot. So, I offered to talk about email. Something we all use, but many not very well. The meeting is the 7th September, at The New Inn at Coate, which is just outside Devizes. At this time we are fully booked with 35 members already coming. So, we are looking with the organisers for a way to disseminate the information to those that can not be accommodated. The Club has nearly 300 members listed, so only around 10% can attend one of the meetings.

I am waiting to see what questions they can think of to make we work for my supper. Of course showing yourself as a local expert on a subject is a great way of building trust and respect with your contacts, and increases the chance of a good response when you approach them to become a customer. We have asked that questions be given in advance, so that I will be able to prepare any material to give the best answer possible. This is a variation on the 10 minute presentation or education idea which is used by many networking groups, so it is exciting to be the first person to take the ‘hot seat’

More information about the questions, and answers will be posted on this site when we have had the meeting, and I hope the club will distribute some news from it too.

So, what is the business plan for this talk. Well the first thing is to give honest and open answers taht everybvody can understand. There will have to be a way for more detailed information to be given, as required, which will be arranged after the meeting. It is also likely that I will offer some sort of evaluation, or free offer, so that the visitors will have the chance to ‘try’ the methods and ideas that I share during the meeting.

Why is Search Changing

So, we need a quick history lesson on search, according to JD.

First they used meta tags, which people put at the start of each page, so search engines could list you in the right place. But sites starting to lie about their content.

So then search engines developed ways of analysing the content of your pages, so they could list you correctly. But as the numbers of sites increased, it became hard for the search engines to decide which should be number one.

So search engines started looking at links into a page. Taking the view that those ‘recommended’ by links must be the best pages. With the idea that everybody would use blogs and links, this was the latest thinking.

But the Internet is now perceived to be run by social media. We spend more time in Facebook than Google. More of our ‘recommendations’ are coming through Facebook, Facebook pages, tweets and other social media.

Google was starting to feel its dominance was threatened. Could people start using the Facebook search rather than a Google Search? Also, how could it tap into these social media recommendations? They were already paying Facebook for like data.

Well Google is taking more and more notice from links put on social media, but was not going to let all this social space be left without something from the big G. This is where Google Plus comes in.  Google Plus is a new social media application. As far as search is concerned you are expected to ‘Plus’ a page, in the same way you can ‘like’ a page.

Google is then using the Google Plus, (and other social media) to influence their Google listings. However, there is one major change in the mindset of the Google listing from this.

In the past a website created ‘power’ from content, links and likes. The more power it had, the bigger its chance of being number one for a search term.  Google created something called PageRank, which is still used today.  You could also get more page rank when a site, also of high page rank gave you a recommendation.

However, when we start looking at social media, we are not talking about web sites, but people. So Google looks to start giving ‘author rank’ to people. Their contributions will then get better listings than lesser authors. We would therefore expect that over time a group of  Authors or Gurus will start to dominate the listings for their particular area of expertise.

This does not mean that all the other methods of listing are dumped. They will still be part of the mix to get your number one google listing. But, the prominance to sites and pages that have ‘Google plus One’ likes, will have increasingly more inportance.

So, you need to rethink your strategy. Preferably you can have an expert or two in the company that will release all your ‘good information’. They will ned a Google Plus account, which is currently limited. Their followers will Google Plus the contributions and you get top listings for your sites. So now life is going to get harder. You need to create content, attribute it to your author and then have it liked.

Hackers and other people who try and subvert Google Listings will have much more trouble now. Just making lots of worthless links is not going to give you top spot.

Of course, companies, like Groupon, hope that you will just take a recommendation from a trusted source like them, which is why Google tried to buy this company recently for around eight billion dollars.

Google Changes Everything – Again.

These changes only happened this week so I still don’t understand all the implications, but all SEO ‘experts’ are voided and must re-learn new skills to prove themselves all other again.

If you dont have a nominated ‘Guru’ for your market. Then you need to find one today.

If you dont have a social media presence, then you are officailly dead.

The simple problem is that Google can not rank sites properly anymore. People recommend their sites using ‘likes’ from Facebook and short links in Twitter. Google had to find a way to tap into this collective information. Backlinks were no longer used to recommend sites. People are more likely to use bookmarks from Likes or  Google +1′s. Now, Google has this plan, you need to re-think your strategy completely, becuase this is happening now.

Ways to Increase your geographic reach.

Most of our businesses have a limit to where we can sell. Where you provide a service you can be limited by a geographic area. So you may think that outside that area there is not opportunity for sales. Well, there are a number of ways you can increase your coverage.

  1. Take on staff to work for you in a new region
  2. Find Business partners to sell for you
  3. 'Sell' your knowledge as an Ebook, Video or seminar.

Ebook

I often use Ebooks to explain issues. This allows me to demonstrate my knowledge and explain more fully the subject than I would be able to on a web page. I might even have a charge for the Ebook so I could be charging the customer for this information. The Ebook could provide the whole explanation, or just highlight the issues so the customer is better informed at the end.

Video or Seminar

Many people will hold a seminar or speak at a breakfast meeting. A video or online seminar is just the next step. You can use the same content or provide more information. How to Video If you provide a service, like carpet cleaning,  it is unlikely that you will travel 200 miles to clean one carpet. However, you may decide to post a video on how to remove certain types of stains. This could be charged, included with the chemicals required to do the work If you 'clean' PC's from Virus etc. You may provide a video on basic virus removal, so that the customer will at least be able to connect to the Internet, where you can then take control remotely and finish the job. You may not want to travel the country to do book keeping, but a video on how to prepare your books would still allow them to be sent to you for the final preparation of accounts. I even use simple how-to videos to provide to people who contact me with the obvious intention of gathering all the information and doign it themselves! (yes you are warned)

Don’t be outbid on Ebay! – My Tool of Revenge

I use eBay as my price comparison site.

When I am looking for a new bit of technology, I will see if it is available on eBay. It needs to be listed by a few companies to create the competition, but I find that once one company starts selling a reasonable number, others will follow.

This post is not about the listings, it is about Bidding. I spent nearly a week trying to acquire a specific Nikon Camera for my upcoming photographic course. I knew the model I wanted and the price I was prepared to pay.

Many a time I had the camera in my sight when I was outbid at the end. The temptation is to put in a really high bid in and hope you can out trump others, but this can be an expensive business.

So, my strategy was to watch the cameras and then put in my bid towards the end of the process. Within the last 10 or 20 seconds was too late. The eBay bidding process requires you to place your bid and then confirm it. This takes time and with 20 seconds left, you run the risk of not finishing the process in time (as I found out a couple of times!).

The great JD Philosophy of ‘If you can’t Win, Cheat’ had to be enacted. I therefore perused the internet for the Automatic Auction Bidding Tools. There are a number of companies listed and if I was going to hand over my EBay credentials to allow a third party to make bidding commitments on my behalf, I needed to be sure they were trustworthy!

The first thing I did was to change my eBay password. I then subscribed to auctionraptor.com, which is kind enough to offer a 30day trial and then month by month subscription. After handing over the required details i filled the system up with the next 4 cameras on auction at eBay together with the prices I was prepared to pay for each.

Now what Auction Raptor, and these other bidding systems do, is to place your bid in the final seconds of the auction. This means that people do not have the chance to up their bid against you. If there maximum bid already submitted fails to trump your offer, you win, and at the price just above anybody else’s’ maximum. With Auction Raptor, you can put a set of bids in a group, so as soon as you win an auction, the rest of your bids on that group are cancelled. It also warns you if your bid is exceeded earlier!

You will now guess that the final page in this story is that I acquired the very next camera, and at less than I had been prepared to pay. Unlike previous auction items, my bid was submitted too late for the others to respond.

I have since also used this tool to grab a cable adapter, which has an auction starting price 50p below their buy it now price. Saving 50p on a £2.80 product is a big difference.

In conclusion, I must say, that Bidding Tools like this are useful. You can be assured of making your bid in the dying seconds and not even having to be around at the end of the auction to follow the action. – Whether you consider the benefit and time for manual bidding justify the subscription price, is up to your personal use.

Quick Launch in Wondows 7

If you want quick access to those applicaitons you use the most, you can drag them onto the toolbar at the bottom of the screen.

They can then be launched with a click of the mouse. When you hover over these, any windows that are already active for this application will be displayed. Click on any of these boxes to open that application.

And if you want to close all your windows, I have a show desktop area on the bottom right of the bar to the right of my date and time display.

Where do you keep passwords?

Many of the browsers can now remember passwords for your main sites, like Ebay, Google etc. However, this is not secure if your PC ever gets stolen, or simply when another member of the family posts on your Facebook page, or makes a pruchase with your eBay account!

I like to use a more secure system. That is RoboForm. This application does cost a few dollars, but remembers all my passwords, including giving me a choice when I have stored multiple passwords for the same website.

I use the version RoboForm Togo. This software installed on a USB memory stick, NOT the PC. What’s more I can then plug this into ANY pc and the application will give me access to all my passwords while it is installed.

When I am finished, I remove the USB stick, the software disappears and nobody can access my passwords

  • Yes, you can backup the passwords, even to a paper version for safe keeping.
  • Yes, you can also use the program to create very secure random passwords for you.
